Microdermabrasion is a quick, non-invasive skin treatment, ideal for cleansing, refining and smoothing the skins surface. Using a diamond-tipped suction machine the procedure removes the surface layer of dead skin and stimulates healthy vital reactions in the deeper layers of the skin, resulting in soft and hydrated skin that glows.

Microdermabrasion is a gentle exfoliating treatment that removes layers of dead and damaged skin, revealing a smoother, fresher complexion. Performed by a hand-held wand that features an exfoliating diamond tip, the wand is passed over the skin 2-3 times drawing in air which creates a vacuum when the wand touches the skin. As the exfoliating tip of the wand passes across the skin’s surface, it picks up dead surface skin cells along the way, unclogging pores, removing dry skin, increasing circulation and refining the skin’s texture.

Microdermabrasion treatment is a painless and completely safe procedure. The procedures is customised to your skin type and because it’s not an invasive treatment, it requires no downtime. Sessions can be scheduled at any time of the day, allowing you to get back to your normal activities in no time. Treatments are comfortable with a slight tingling sensation, the sensation of a good exfoliation. A slightly sun burnt sensation is experienced for a short time afterwards.

A minimum series of three treatments is recommended for best results for skin rejuvenation.

As the skin is constantly renewing itself, we recommend that most clients return on a regular basis to keep their skin looking its best. Many clients return every 1-3 months. The frequency of treatments can be decided as part of your treatment plan in our Bentleigh skin clinic.

Microdermabrasion is suitable for all skin types. Our machine can even be adjusted to cater for sensitive skin.

The treatment can be safely performed anywhere on the body, including the face, arms, chest, hands, legs, neck and back.

Generally, a session of microdermabrasion of the face takes approximately 20 minutes. It is not painful and it may feel like you are having a facial.

Prior to microdermabrasion, your face is thoroughly cleansed. The microdermabrasion head is then systematically passed over the face multiple times. Particular creams or serums are put on your face after the procedure has been completed. After microdermabrasion, your skin may appear red and this usually persists for a short time only and you will notice that your skin feels soft and smooth afterwards.

We recommend 3-6 sessions at fortnightly to monthly intervals to ahieve the best results. Ultimately, the number and frequency of microdermabrasion will depend on the skin type of the client as well as their needs.

Microdermabrasion takes about 20-minutes.

The problem with microdermabrasion and chemical peels is that they can only interact with the skin so much. When combined, they can significantly provide a more effective treatment. Also when combined they reduce the risk of unwanted side effects. Clients typically see clearer skin when they undergo both treatments rather than only one.

The other advantage of combining chemical peels with microdermabrasion treatments is the fact that the recovery period between treatments is typically shorter. This allows you to minimise redness and swelling while still enjoying smooth and clear skin.

Microdermabrasion feels like tiny sand-like particles running across your face; a strange sensation for first timers but by no means painful. Your face feels warm and pink afterwards for a few hours.

Microdermabrasion provides exceptional results for the following conditions:

  • fine lines and wrinkles
  • sun-damaged skin
  • acne and acne scars
  • oily skin
  • blackheads and whitehead
  • enlarged and open pores
  • age spots
  • dull and congested skin
  • suitable for all skin types

The skin might be slightly red afterwards for a few hours. Mild shedding of the skin is common in the first few days. We advise you not to pick any flakiness caused from the treatment, as this can cause scarring. After a few days, you will notice a visible improvement with the skin looking smoother and fresher.

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment that removes only the surface layer of dead skin, while dermabrasion is an invasive procedure that removes several layers of skin at once. This often requires a general or local anaesthetic, and leaves skin red, swollen and extremely sensitive for up to 2 weeks. Microdermabrasion is a much milder treatment and is painless with minimal side-effects but still powerful and effective in skin exfoliation.

There are two types of microdermabrasion machines: one that use micro-crystals to abrade the skin, and the other uses with a laser cut diamond tip wand. The diamond tip wand allows areas closer to the eyes and mouth to be treated more accurately, while the crystal machine has a limited scope, due to the possibility of crystals getting into the eyes and causing damage. Diamond tip machines are also gentler to the skin, and result in a more precise treatment.

Yes absolutely. However, we strongly recommend to stay in the shade and avoid sun exposure afterwards in order to obtain the best results.

Microdermabrasions are different to a regular facial, as they use active skin care products and advanced technology to exfoliate the dull, dead, outer surface of the skin, leaving it clear, bright and purified. Most notably, microdermabrasion treatments feature the use of diamond-tipped machines and vacuum suction to extract debris from your pores and collect dead skin.

Both treatments are considered to be a form of exfoliation. Exfoliation is the act of removing dead skin cells from the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. The easiest way to maintain healthy skin is by keeping it free and clear of dead skin cells – making exfoliation critical to your regular skincare routine.

The difference between microdermabrasion and chemical peels is that they are two different types of exfoliation: microdermabrasion is a physical exfoliation, while chemical peels are a chemical exfoliation.

A chemical peel uses one or a variety of acids to exfoliate the uppermost layers of skin. Ideal for improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, enlarged pores, discolourations, and acne, chemical peels can be highly customised to treat specific concerns. Chemical peels range from superficial to medium or deep. Chemical peels are performed in a series of at least three but ideally six, and must be performed by a properly trained medical professional.

Chemical peels are incredibly safe for most skin types and have minimal to no downtime. The side effects are minimal compared to the benefits!

When most people think about chemical peels, their mind goes to the scene in Sex and the City when Samantha Jones gets a chemical peel and her face is bright red from a “freshening” peel. This famous scene has unfortunately scared countless women away from the benefits of peels – to brighten the complexion and smooth out wrinkles.

LEADING UP TO YOUR APPOINTMENT

  • Avoid sun exposure, fake tanning and stop using retinol/ vitamin A or Hydroquinone (whitening creams).
  • Avoid hair removal on your face (waxing, laser or IPL hair removal, electrolysis)
  • Prepare your skin using the recommended skincare products.

THE FIRST DAY

  • Avoid direct sun exposure. Stay in the shade when possible. Not only will this protect your skin, it can further stave off some common signs of ageing.
  • Avoid active products containing acids and retinol. These products can increase your sensitivity or cause excessive dryness
  • Do not pick the skin
  • Avoid hot showers, sauna, steam rooms and exercise
  • Stick to a gentle skincare routine using the recommended products.

The use of the the wrong products can cause your skin to become weaker and less strong; this is not just applicable after a glycolic acid peel treatment, but a lesson for your skincare routine overall. To avoid using the wrong products and to get the most out of your skincare routine, it is always recommended to speak to a medical professional who can provide you with the best products for your needs.

1 WEEK AFTER YOUR CHEMICAL PEEL

You can now start using products containing acids and retinol.

We know, we know, a chemical peel sounds a little intense. Your mind probably immediately pictures skin shedding, burning, and extreme redness. • exfoliation of dead skin
  • smoothed facial lines and wrinkles

  • improvement of blotchy skin, uneven skin pigmentation and melasma
  • younger, and more refreshed skin post treatment
                                                                                                                                                                    • minimal to no downtime

  • deep chemical exfoliation

  • facial rejuvenation
  • unclogging pores
  • getting rid of acne
  • reducing the depth of wrinkles or acne scarring
  • brightening skin tone
  • enhancing the absorption of other skin care products

When the chemical peel is applied to the skin, it speeds up the exfoliation process of the skin by targeting surface cells and speeding up cell turnover and renewal. As your skin naturally sheds the dull surface layer of skin, fresh new cells are revealed for bright, fresh skin!

Let’s delve deeper to answer this question. A chemical peel involves applying a product on the skin and that product breaks the bonds that hold skin cells together. The outer layer of the skin then sheds, revealing new, younger-looking skin underneath, with fewer lines, wrinkles and other imperfections.

A chemical peel involves applying a product on the skin that will increase epidermal cell proliferation and remove plugs and stratum corneum within the pores.

After you leave our clinic, your skin will be doing its thing, busily getting rid of the old skin to make room for the new skin. Not every chemical peel will result in you skin shedding. But within 3 days you may see a light flaking of skin. Your skin will continue to improve in health and rejuvenation anywhere between 3-14 days after your chemical peel.

Chemical peels help to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, signs of sun damage, age spots, melasma, congested skin and breakout, adult acne, pore size and an overall reduction in congested skin and breakouts.

A chemical peel is best done in combination with anti aging and rejuvenating skincare such as AHA, vitamin A and vitamin C.

Chemical peels are safe when performed by a trained clinician. You may experience slightly more sensitive skin including some pinkness and puffiness. The most common side effect of a chemical peel is that your skin may be will be more sensitive to sun immediately after your peel. It generally subsides within a day or two.

A professional chemical peel is a fairly quick procedure.

First, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed. A chemical peel preparation solution, similar to a toner, is applied to your skin with cotton pads. A bit of Vaseline may be applied to your lips and around your nostrils to help protect these extra sensitive areas.

Next, the chemical peel solution is applied to the skin with cotton pads. It only takes a few seconds to apply the peel solution. You'll get one to three applications of the solution, one on top of the other, depending on your skin type. More applications equals a stronger peel.

The solution is left on your skin for about three to seven minutes. The skin is then monitored. During this time you'll probably feel some tingling on the skin.

After the time is up, the peel is neutralised with a special solution to deactivate the chemical peel solution. The chemical peel solution is cleansed from your face with a gentle cleanser. An antioxidant serum, followed by a moisturizer is applied to your face to soothe and protect your skin.

Having just one peel done will give your skin a bright, healthy glow and leave it feeling softer and smoother. To treat other skin issues, recommend a series of chemical peels done. This may mean three to ten peels over the course of several weeks to months. But this will vary widely depending on your desired results.s

If you have good general health and reasonable expectations about the benefits you can receive from a chemical peel, you will make a good candidate for a chemical peel treatment.

Glycolic acid is a substance referred to as AHA, which stands for alpha-hydroxy acid. AHA can be obtained substances such as the sugarcane. Like with all chemical peels, a glycolic acid peel works on the skin to induce skin rejuvenation by exfoliating the outer and deeper skin layers.

A Glycolic acid peel stimulates the skin’s ability to produce collagen so that our skin is smooth and youthful. Glycolic acid peels can also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, making it an effective anti-ageing treatment.

Salicylic acid is a substance referred to as BHA, which stands for beta-hydroxy acid. BHA can be obtained substances such as willow bark and wintergreen leaves. Like with all chemical peels, a salicylic acid peel works on the skin to induce skin rejuvenation by exfoliating the outer and deeper skin layers.

  • Comedolytic. This is a fancy word that means salicylic acid unplugs dead skin cells and built-up oils that can cause acne blemishes.
  • Desmolytic. Salicylic acid has the abilities to exfoliate skin cells through disrupting intercellular connections. This is known as a desmolytic effect.
  • Anti-inflammatory. Salicylic acid has an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin at low concentrations. This may help in treating acne.

This is a medium-strength peel that’s made up of three main ingredients (salicylic acid, lactic acid, and resorcinol). It’s a great peel for hyperpigmentation and acne-prone or oily skin, but should be avoided if you have dry or sensitive skin because it could be fairly drying.

This peel will cause frosting, when parts of your skin turn white during the peel due to the surface of your skin being exfoliated away by the acidic solution. Downtime could last anywhere from a couple days to a week. At Dental and Skin Clinique we do not offer this type of chemical peel because of the side effects. We feel there are other chemical peels that give just as good of a result with far fewer to no side effects.

At-home chemical peels cost less, but they aren't as powerful as professional peels.

Pregnancy melasma is a skin condition that causes dark spots on the face, typically on the forehead, cheeks and upper lip.

About 50-75% of pregnant women get melasma. Your hormones are causing melanocytes, the cells that create the pigment in your skin, to pump out too much melanin. Environmental factors like sun and heat exposure might exacerbate your melasma.

Also when combined they reduce the risk of unwanted side effects. Clients typically see clearer skin when they undergo both treatments rather than only one.
